What Do You Need to Build a Website?

Building a website can be a simple or complicated process depending on the needs of the designer.

There are several components to building a website. Components often depend on the type of web site being designed. There are personal web sites, business and company web sites, government and organizational web sites, informational web sites, and web sites for selling a product or service. Planning is also a component of web site development and design.

Domain Names

Domain names identify the website and what the website offers. The domain name is what persons wishing to visit a website types into the search bar following the characters http://. Each domain name has a two or three letter suffix which include .com, .net, .org., .edu, and .gov. Once a domain name is selected it is registered, usually at a cost of around $20.00 per year.

Web Design Tools

Web design tools provides the web site developer a means by which to layout, design, and upload finished web pages. Some options include buttons, background colors and patterns, various fonts and text colors, and different layouts. Some word processors and desktop publishers include web design tools. Web page(s) can be saved onto the desktop until they are finished, and then be uploaded onto a domain.

HTML

Most desktop publishers, word processors, and free or paid sites that provide easy to use web design tools automatically convert text into HTML when the web page(s) are uploaded and published on the web. HTML is a computer language. The HTML coding allows websites to be viewed by anyone connected to the Internet. HTML is relatively easy to learn. The basics are accessible to most people in one sitting. Some web site designers prefer using HTML because it allows more flexibility.

Search Engines and Keywords

When submitting a URL to a search engine, site owners are often asked to provide key words that will assist persons searching the web for a service, product, organization, or information, etc. Key words should be directly linked to the specifics of the website. Website optimization tools can help with the selection of the right key words for a website.

Webhosts

A web host rents web space and bandwidth to anyone wishing to publish a web site. The web host provides the customer with an account. There are web hosting packages that include free web site builders, or packages with different costs. Some web hosts offer free web space on the condition that a suffix containing their domain name be added to the domain name selected by the web designer.
