How to Create a Web Redirect in DNS
The Domain Name System, usually shortened to "DNS," translates IP addresses into domain names. IP addresses consist of numerical series, which are much harder to remember than domain names, such as eHow.com and ESPN.com. By creating a web redirect in your DNS, you can make anyone who types your site's domain name into a browser arrive at any other domain you choose.
Instructions
Difficulty:
Step 1
Go online and access your domain registrar account. You typically do this on the same site with which you registered your domain name.
Step 2
Locate your domain details and information. This appears listed with the information relevant to your domain.
Step 3
Find your DNS information. It should be listed in your domain account or in a section labeled "nameservers."
Step 4
Change your DNS information so it matches the site to which you want to redirect. By doing so, anyone who types in the address will be redirected to the site you provide. This function may be located in a section called "CNAME."
Step 5
Save your changes, which may not take effect immediately. To test that you've successfully placed your redirect, type in the domain name and verify that you get redirected to your desired site.
