How To Create a DNS Record for a Web Link
A Domain Name Server (DNS) stores the connection between web addresses and IP addresses (the numerical labels assigned to websites). A DNS record works in conjunction with the Domain Name System to map the Internet name with the IP address. In other words, when someone shows interest in a domain name, such as clicking on a web link, this record tells the requesting agent what IP address works for that website. The DNS system is a complicated facet of the Internet, but setting up a DNS record is not.
Instructions
Difficulty:
Step 1
Obtain a list of name servers for your DNS account. A name server (NS) works like a switchboard for the Internet. This list will be available from the company hosting your website. For example, one Yahoo name server lists as "yns1.yahoo.com." For an accurate DNS record, you must use the proper name server for your hosting company.
Step 2
Log on to your domain name account. To do this, you must return to the site where you purchased your domain name.
Step 3
Locate the section of your account profile that deals with settings or name server records. Check for titles such as "DNS Settings" or "Administration." If you cannot locate the setting page, go to the Help section and search for "Name Servers."
Step 4
Examine the current name server settings and compare it to the list offered by the web host. Often the listing will match. This is especially true if the company that hosts the website also registered the domain.
Step 5
Change the record if necessary. This step will depend on the domain company. Check for options such as "Update DNS" or "Update Name Servers." Once you locate the screen, enter the name servers provided by the web host. For instance, if your site sits with Yahoo, you might enter "yns1.yahoo.com" as the name server for your domain. Save the record and exit the screen.

Tips & Warnings
- The domain company may have slots for two name servers on one domain name. This covers the site in case one server goes down. If appropriate, enter two name servers from the list provided by the web host.
