How To Buy Domain Names Online
Domain names, or URLs, are the addresses used to navigate to web pages. You can purchase these domain names on the Internet using a credit card and upload files for a website or storage. Domain names purchased online can be directed all to a single website or to individual websites. A URL can be purchased along with web hosting or by itself. The same name used for a domain name can be applied to .com, .net, .org or any of the newer domain types such as .tv or .info.
Instructions
Difficulty:
Step 1
Decide what type of domain name you want: a single domain or a domain with hosting. Domains with .com, .net or .org can be bought through almost any domain name registrar. Domains with .gov or .edu cannot be purchased by the general public. Country-specific domains must be purchased through registrars that can register for the specific country. Specialty domains such as .tv or .info are only provided by some registrars and can be expensive compared to a .com, .net or .org domain.
Step 2
Choose a domain name registrar by the type of domains they provide and through price comparison. As of 2010, domains cost anywhere from $3.00 to $20.00 per year.
Step 3
Enter the domain name you want on the domain name registrar's website. The registrar will search to make sure the name you want is available. If the name is not available, the registrar will list alternatives that are available.
Step 4
Fill out the registrar form which will include your name, address, email address, phone number and credit card information. The registrar may provide an option to pay one to four years in advance.
