How To Block Websites Using Microsoft DNS

DNS stands for "Domain Name System." More specifically, Microsoft DNS is a system that is used on Microsoft operating systems, particularly with computers that are set up using a Microsoft server. In simple terms, Microsoft DNS attaches actual website names to its raw IP addresses. You can alter a file that Microsoft DNS makes calls to in order to block specific websites.

Instructions

Difficulty: 4

Step 1

Log in to your computer using an account that has administrator-level access.

Step 2

Open your "Downloads" folder. Click "Start" and then "Computer" to open Windows Explorer. Click on the "Downloads" folder from the left column.

Step 3

Locate the file named "hosts.zip" in the "Downloads" folder. Right-click the file and select "Extract All."

Step 4

Right-click the file named "mvps.bat" and select "Run as Administrator." Press any key on your keyboard and the hosts file opens.

Step 5

Scroll to the bottom of the hosts file and add the following: 127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com This example blocks the Facebook website. Repeat this on a separate line for each site you want to block. Note that 127.0.0.1 is the "loop back" IP address of your own computer, so always use that number.

Step 6

Close the window and the hosts file changes are saved. You have now blocked websites using the Microsoft DNS.
