How Do I Transfer a Domain Name?

You can transfer your domain name from the company you originally registered with.

You have the freedom to transfer your domain name to any domain manager that you choose. You might want to move your domain if you've received poor service or if you find a company that will save you money on domain renewals. All it takes is following some basic steps to move the management of your domain from one company to another.

Instructions

Difficulty: 2

Step 1

Apply for a transfer. Log into your account with your new registrar and request a domain transfer. If you can't find a link or transfer information for your registrar, try checking the site's frequently asked questions.

Step 2

Unlock your domain. You should be able to unlock your domain from your domain management page by removing your domain protection.

Step 3

Request an authorization code from your old registrar. Depending on your registrar, this option should be available on your account page or domain management page.

Step 4

Enter the authorization code at your new registrar's site. Start the transfer process and enter the authorization code. You will receive an email confirmation of your transfer initiation.

Step 5

Wait five to seven days. Once you receive your transfer initiation confirmation, you only need to wait for the transfer to be completed. You will be notified when the transfer process has finished.

  • A domain transfer only changes the management of a domain name from one registrar to another. It will not affect your website or domain in any other way.
