For How Many Years Can I Purchase my Domain?

Buy your domain name quickly before someone else beats you to it.

Having an online presence is practically required if you want to do successful business. One way to start building a web presence is to purchase a domain name relating to you or your company. Domain names are usually affordable and can be registered and renewed for many years into the future. With new businesses and websites cropping up every day, if you have your heart set on a specific domain name, purchase it quickly before someone else does.

Choosing a Domain Name

You should select a domain name based around what type of business you want to promote. Sometimes it's not a business at all, but a personal website or blog. Whatever you need or want it for, choose something related to the subject, easy to spell and to remember. If you have a blog about toy trains, you might select a domain name like http://www.toytrainsforyou.com. If the domain you want is not be available, try adding your name, state or city to the domain you want.

Registering your Domain Name

In order to secure your new domain name, you will need to register it with a domain company. Use the search feature on the domain provider's website to see if the name you want is available. Then, just create an account, fill in your registration information and select how many years you want the domain for. You can always renew it for additional time later. The prices for domains vary by provider and what type of domain you want (.com, .org, .net, etc.).

Registration Length

How long you can register or renew your domain for depends on the provider. Some allow you to register or renew for up to five years. At others, you can register or renew for up to 10 years. If you are buying your first domain name, you should register it for a year or two and then later, when you are sure that you want to keep it for a long time, renew it up for a longer period.

Types of Domain Names

There are many different types of domain names. You are probably already familiar with the .com domain, which stands for "commercial." Other common domain types include .org (organization) and .net (network). Some of these types, such as .net, were meant for a specific type of business. In this case, it was meant for computer and network companies or groups. There aren't any formal restrictions to who can purchase which type of domain or what they can use them for, however. Other popular domain types in the United States include .info and .us.

What is a Domain Name

Basically, a domain name is an address on the internet. Websites also have a numerical address that routes traffic and information to and from the website. A domain name consisting of words is easier for most people to remember, so they are commonly used instead of the Internet Protocol address (IP address). You can type either address into your browser and reach the same website.
